Custody
Definition:
The right to or responsibility for a child's care and control, carrying with it the duty of providing food, shelter, medical care, education and discipline.
Charge
Definition:
The statement accusing a person of committing a particular crime. Also the judge's instructions to the jury on its duties, on the law involved in the case and on how the law in the case must be applied.
Plea-bargaining
Definition:
A process whereby the prosecutor and defense attorney negotiate a mutually satisfactory disposition of the case. The court and the defendant must approve of any settlements. For example, a guilty plea may be exchanged for a lesser charge or a sentencing recommendation, or for dismissal of one or more of the charges in multi-count information, or for dismissal of another case.
